AMERICAN, Brent Renaud, passed away in Ukraine on March 13, 2022.

The award-winning journalist was reporting in the suburb of Irpin when he was shot and killed.

Who was American Journalist Brent Renaud?

Brent Renaud, 51, was a filmmaker and journalist.

He had worked for a number of news and media organizations including HBO, NBC and The New York Times. 

Cliff Levy, The New York Times deputy managing editor, said Renaud was not on assignment for the publication.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of Brent Renaud’s death. Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker who had contributed to the New York Times over the years.

"Though he had contributed to The Times in the past (mostly recently in 2015), he was not on assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine.

"Early reports that he worked for The Times circulated because he was wearing a Times press badge that been issued for an assignment many years ago," Levy shared in a statement via Twitter.

What happened to Brent Renaud?

Renaud was shot in Ukraine on Sunday while reporting in a suburb of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

According to the head of the Kyiv Police Department, Renaud was in a car with other foreign members of the press when Russian troops opened fire on the vehicle.

"Of course, the profession of a journalist is a risk, but US citizen Brent Renaud paid his life for trying to highlight the aggressor's ingenuity, cruelty and ruthlessness," Andrey Nebitov, the head of the Kyiv region police, said.

Was anyone else killed or injured during the shelling?

In Irpin, a suburb about 12 miles northwest of central Kyiv, bodies lay out in the open Saturday on streets and in a park as shelling continues to rain down.

Another journalist, thought to be Renaud's colleague, was also reportedly injured in the attack.

"Now they are trying to remove the victim from the war zone," Nebitov said.
