Trump: Andrew Cuomo would be better presidential candidate than Biden

President Trump said on Monday that he believes New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo would be a better presidential candidate than Joe Biden.

Trump said he believes that Biden is not “capable” of being president — all but endorsing a push for Cuomo to bump Biden from the Democratic ticket.

“We want to always make sure that we have a great president — we have somebody that’s capable. I personally don’t think Joe Biden is capable,” Trump said during an interview with “Fox & Friends” on Fox News Channel.

Cuomo’s approval rating is near 90 percent as he leads the state’s response to the coronavirus outbreak. This triggered widespread speculation that he would fare better against Trump than Biden, the former vice president, who gets little public notice during the crisis.

“I wouldn’t mind running against Andrew. I have known Andrew for a long time. I wouldn’t mind that. But I’ll be honest, I think he’d be a better candidate than Sleepy Joe,” Trump said.

Trump and his allies often describe Biden, 77, as senile, pointing to campaign-trail gaffes. Trump said Monday: “I watch these critiques of me… they’re written out, ‘Joe Biden has said’, and then they put this very highly sophisticated statement out. I say Joe Biden didn’t write that statement and Joe Biden, I guarantee you, didn’t even see that statement. So no, I think probably Andrew would be better.”

Online gamblers and liberal pundits are among those who see Cuomo as a potential savior for Democrats, who are on track to nominate Biden. “I see Cuomo as the Democratic nominee this year,” said HBO host Bill Maher. “If we could switch Biden out for him, that’s the winner.”

But Trump said on Monday that he believes much of Cuomo’s credit for responding to the deadly virus is owed to him.

“One of the reasons his numbers are high on handling it is because of the federal government, because we give them ships and we give them ventilators and we give them all of the things that we’re giving them,” Trump said. “One of the reasons he’s successful is because we’ve helped make him successful.”
