Commuters are warned to brace for possible travel chaos and flooding as thunderstorms and showers move across the UK today.
Rain will clear in the east this morning, bringing spells of sunshine, but the skies will remain rather dull in the far northeast, the Met Office predicts.
Heavy showers will develop across the south and west throughout the day, bringing a threat of slow moving hail and thunder.
Although wet conditions persist today, sunshine and summer-like temperatures are just around the corner. The mercury is expected to go above 20C this weekend, surpassing this year’s record-high temp of 21.3C that was recorded on Sunday.
It comes after Britons battled heatwaves and one of the hottest summers on record last year when temperatures rose above 40C.

Heavy rain and showers persist today, after turbulent weather put a damper on King Charles’s Coronation celebrations over the weekend.
Forecasters say the showers will move southeastwards overnight, leaving for a dry night for most.
Pockets of cloud are likely to linger across England for much of the night, with the clearest of conditions in Scotland and Wales. There will be moderate winds in the southwest, gentle elsewhere.
The UK will see another bright start tomorrow with some sunshine as widespread showers will develop. It is forecast to be a wet afternoon on Wednesday, with some thundery showers on the east coast of England.
The driest of conditions will be in Scotland, though it is set to be a cloudy afternoon for all.

Things are looking up towards the weekend as Friday and Saturday will see fewer showers and pleasant temperatures of 20 to 21C.
‘In any sunshine this week it will actually feel quite warm,’ the Met Office told MailOnline yesterday.
They added that forecast for the rest of May looks ‘fairly changeable’, with ‘further spells and unsettled weather’ anticipated.
It comes after heavy showers dampened King Charles’s Coronation weekend, with royal fans camping out and waiting in queues to witness the event being drenched by downpours.
