NCIS is currently taking its annual winter break from its latest season on CBS. The police procedural will be returning in early January 2022 to continue series 19 which has been airing since September. As of late, there have been rumours circulating that the new lot of episodes could see the return of two veteran agents.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from NCIS.

Agent Tony Dinozzo (played by Michael Weatherly) was the first to go of the two after 13 seasons.

He believed Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) had been murdered in Israel and when he found out about him having their daughter Tali, he left NCIS behind to look after her in Paris.

Thankfully, it was discovered in series 17 that Ziva had faked her death in order to protect her family.

With some encouragement from Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon), Ziva left as well to join Tony and Tali in their new life together.

Speaking of Gibbs, he made his exit in season 19 after initially being suspended from the team by Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) for attacking someone involved in a dogfighting ring.

He spent his free time helping to catch a serial killer which led him to Alaska with Timothy McGee (Sean Murray).

It was here that he decided to stay put in Alaska as it was the calmest he felt since losing his wife and daughter.

Despite having only just left the drama, there have been various hints which point to his and potentially Dinozzo’s return.

Just after actor Harmon’s onscreen exit, showrunner Steven D Binder said: “As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show.

“Our north star has always been staying true to our characters, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go.

“So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years … never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”

Then there is the matter of actor Weatherly’s mysterious Twitter posts.

Weatherly now stars in his own legal drama Bull but as of late, he has been posting more NCIS-related tweets.

For instance, earlier this year, he shared a picture of himself on set with an NCIS cap on.

On December 6, Weatherly posted a jokey clip of him questioning a Christmas tree.

He wrote: “It’s time for some HARDBALL Xmas questions #ncis”, and when the camera turned to him, Weatherly was wearing an NCIS hat.

In a previous post, he also talked about Gibbs which has got fans thinking.

Weatherly tweeted alongside an old black and white picture of him on the NCIS set: “This guy woke me up this morning.

“Then I realized it was still a dream. He wouldn’t stop talking about Gibbs and his shoulder holster. #ncis dream.”

With Weatherly continuing to drop NCIS clues, could it be that the pair will return for the second half of NCIS season 19?

So far, it hasn’t been confirmed if Dinozzo and Gibbs will be back in the next lot of episodes but given all these clues, it does seem like something special could be on the horizon.

NCIS season 19 will continue on Monday, January 3, 2022, on CBS in America. A UK release date hasn’t been announced.
