Who was Vanessa’s dad in Emmerdale and how did he die?

Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) hasn’t had the easiest time of it in Emmerdale lately, in the wake of her bowel cancer diagnosis.

Having undergone surgery in the wake of her diagnosis, she now faces gruelling chemotherapy – which begins in Monday night’s episode of the soap.

But while she attends the session alone, tensions rise when Kerry (Laura Norton) pops in to keep her company.

There’s tension between them as the subject of Vanessa’s dad comes up – and specifically his death last year, which Kerry played a part in.

Just who was her dad and how did he die?

Who was Vanessa’s dad and how did he die?

Vanessa’s dad was Frank Clayton, played in the show by actor Michael Praed.

The character died last August in a fire at the Sharma sweet factory, which was accidentally started by Kerry and her daughter Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson)

The horrifying blaze began when the pair of them raided the safe at the factory – a crime that Kerry claimed would be ‘victimless’.

However the two soon realised that they were being caught on CCTV, and when they tried to destroy the footage, they left dangerous live wires exposed.

The wires sparked and started the blaze, but despite thinking nobody would be hurt, it claimed Frank’s life when he dived into the burning building to save the life of his daughter Tracy (Amy Walsh).

He was able to get her out alive, but was subsequently killed in an explosion at the factory.

Frank’s death was kept secret from viewers until it happened, with Praed later appearing on the show’s Facebook page to confirm ‘the demise of young Frank’.

He added: ‘I would just like to thank all you guys for your support and I hope you continue to love the show as much as I do and love all the people in it.’

Emmerdale continues on Monday night on ITV at 8pm.
