Katheryn Winnick portrayed shieldmaiden Lagertha from the very beginning of Vikings in 2013 until season six, part one, in 2019. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know about Winick’s exit from the series.
Why did Katheryn Winnick leave Vikings?
In Vikings season six, episode six, the famous shieldmaiden Lagertha was killed.
The Seer’s (played by John Kavanagh) prophecy had come true and she died as predicted, at the hands of one of Ragnar Lothbrok’s (Travis Fimmel) sons.
Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and also suffering from PTSD, was hallucinating at the time he killed Lagertha.
Lagertha had arrived in Kattegat injured and had collapsed outside Hvitserk’s home.

He believed her body to be a serpent/Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) and attacked the snake, stabbing it continuously.
However, he soon realised what he had stabbed was not a serpent and was in fact Lagertha.
In episode seven, Lagertha was given a traditional Viking funeral, with her body being carried out to sea on a burning boat.
As her body sunk to the bottom of the ocean, she was reunited in Valhalla with her true love Ragnar.
Winnick simply left the series as her character’s story had come to an end.
However, she remained a vital part of the Vikings story and even returned to direct the eighth episode Valhalla Can Wait.
Speaking at the Comic-Con @Home panel this summer, Winnick reflected on leaving the show.
She said: “I guess it’s bittersweet if I’m 100% honest.
“Just in terms of being on the show for so long and having it aired and now that Lagertha has gone to Valhalla, it was definitely harder than I thought I would go through just personally, just seeing my death.

Vikings creator admits surprise reaction to Lagertha and Ragnar deaths [RECAP]
“Watching Lagertha just transition over to Valhalla, it was definitely a bittersweet moment in a lot of ways.
“Obviously all the hard work, I made some good friends, but also sad to see it end.
“But Michael [Hirst] wrote me such a great death and funeral.”
Vikings show creator Hirst has also addressed Lagertha’s death and Winnick’s time on the show.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight Canada earlier this year, Hirst admitted it was hard to kill of Lagertha but insisted it came at the right time.
He said: “I knew she was going to die at the hands of one of the sons of Ragnar because that’s what the Seer had said.
“I may be the Seer myself, but he has a semi-autonomous life and he said it, so it had to happen.”
“I have to say it was very, very difficult to write that stuff and to know I was writing her death.”
