Alexander Ludwig has confirmed his latest exciting casting news in a new update on Instagram. Best known as the son of Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel) in Vikings, which came to an end on Amazon Prime Video last year, the Canadian star will take on a principal role in an upcoming sports film for Eros STX.

The Vikings star is confirmed to be joining Stephan James and J.K. Simmons alongside a cast of Hollywood A-listers in National Champions.

Best known for portraying Jesse Owens in the 2016 film Race, James heads the film as a star quarterback who incites a 72 hour strike before the biggest game of the year.

Ludwig is onboard as a tight end player named Emmett who joins forces with James’ protagonist to fight for fair compensation of college athletes.

The upcoming picture will be adapted by Adam Mervis’ play of the same name about the big business of college sports and the fight for fair pay and representation for the young athletes who put their bodies on the line.

The former Vikings star took to Instagram to celebrate the news when the latest casting update was announced by Deadline.

He wrote: “Thank you for the love, honoured to be amongst such a tremendous group of people to tell such an important story.”

His post then credited director Ric Roman Waugh, who most recently helmed the Gerard Butler-starring disaster film Greenland.

Ludwig’s latest post was met with ecstatic reactions from his 3.5 million Instagram followers.

One of his fans wrote: “They forgot to mention that @alexanderludwig no longer sleeps and now works 24/7 lol. Congrats.”

The star also gave a shout-out to co-star Stephan James, who received acclaim for his performance in Barry Jenkins’ drama film If Beale Street Could Talk.

They are also joined by Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons, who has just wrapped up his turn as the superhero Omni-Man in the first season of the new adult animation, Invincible.

Also joining the cast are Uzo Aduba (Mrs. America), Andrew Bachelor (The Walking Dead), David Koechner (Anchorman), Timothy Olyphant (The Mandalorian) and Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen).
