Brand new Netflix drama The One takes place in a world where lonely hearts can instantly match themselves with someone with whom they’re guaranteed to fall in love. Series lead Zoë Tapper has talked exclusively to about forming an instant connection with her co-star, Jana Pérez.

British star Zoë Tapper has spoken up about some of the toughest moments in her new drama series for Netflix, The One.

The actress portrays straightlaced detective Kate Saunders, whose personal life is thrown for a loop when she connects with Sophia (played by Jana Pérez) on an incredible new matchmaking app.

Thanks to The One’s DNA matching and 100 percent success rate, Kate and Sophia immediately fall in love with each other.

The pair first meet via video call before they decide to meet up in London, a sight that has become incredibly familiar to any viewers trying to date during lockdown.

Tapper explained: “There are two things to say about that. First of all, Zoom conversations anyway are quite strange and we’ve all had to get used to them over the last year in a much bigger way.

“There is a slight disconnect anyway, it’s not quite the same as being physically in the same room as somebody. So there is an element of that.”

Despite the first stages of their relationship taking place long-distance, the two co-stars’ chemistry together is immediately apparent.

Thankfully, Tapper and Pérez had already built up a rapport behind the scenes, and their first meeting wasn’t quite as daunting as a real first Zoom date.

She continued: “Fortunately, just in purely practical terms I had already met Jana the actress.

“She’s a very vivacious, bubbly woman so I had already had the experience of her charisma.”

However, communicating over a video chat still came with its fair share of challenges, even for a major Netflix production.

Tapper admitted she was often acting by herself in Kate and Sophia’s earliest scenes.

The star recalled: “We didn’t even have each other at all times on the screen, sometimes I was just doing my performance to a blank screen.

“I wasn’t actually doing a performance to her face or her speaking.”

Things quickly get even more complicated when tragedy strikes before their first meeting and Sophia winds up in hospital with serious injuries.

After first meeting Sophia on her tablet screen, Kate spends much of the series being unable to speak with the love of her life.

Tapper went on: “So it was a bit of a challenge, because always you’re looking for the connection between the two characters.

“But she’s a very easy person to act with, I still found it delightful working with her.”

Kate and Sophia’s whirlwind romance will certainly send hearts racing, and could convince viewers that The One’s promise to find everyone their true love could actually work in reality.

The One is available to stream on Netflix.
