The Grand Tour's Richard Hammond reveals why this year's 'rotten, brutal' challenge was the hardest to date

THE Grand Tour's Richard Hammond has revealed why this year's 'rotten, brutal' challenge was the hardest to date.

The 50-year-old and his co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May head to Madagascar for The Grand Tour: A Massive Hunt, where they set off on a quest to find La Buse's famous hidden treasure.

The trio's latest Amazon Prime Video special sees them adapt their chosen vehicles for the unknown terrain ahead, but it still isn't enough to deal with what they eventually take on.

Speaking about the latest special to The Sun Online, Richard revealed the hardest part was: "Just the relentless nature of that road."

He added: "Repairs to the car and getting those trams back on was a brutal job, and then getting the thing moving again, then there’d be a noise and I’d be like ‘I don’t want to get out and see because I know what’s happened, I can feel it’."

Richard had a particularly tough time with the adaptations he had made to his car, and soon found himself trailing behind Jeremy, 60, and James, 57.

Richard continued: "It’s also a pretty rotten feeling when you know you’ve got six hours left to go and the other area already there and they’ve already opened a bottle of something nice.

"And they might be sleeping in a tent or sleeping somewhere rough but they’ve stopped moving and they can just sit there and chill out and I’m going to be hours and hours but that’s part of the adventure.

"Also it’s what people like to see, they like to see us uncomfortable and I was uncomfortable."

The presenters take on what Jeremy describes as "the worst road ever", as well as crossing rivers on local ferries before attempting to dig for treasure in a number of locations.

Asked if he genuinely thought they could find the treasure, Richard said: "I’m a massive fan of all that stuff, I know Jeremy was very cynical about it and very mocking, but it’s historical fact that a lot of these people did exist and bury treasure.

"So you know, there was a chance, I wasn’t pretending when I said I was really excited to be exploring all that, I love that whole era.

"If there’s a fancy dress party, whatever the theme, I have a pirate costume and I go as a pirate. They’re probably the nicest clothes I’ve got."

The Grand Tour: A Massive Hunt premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, December 18.
