Hiram Lodge (played by Mark Consuelos) has guilt written all over him in the latest trailer for the ongoing fifth season of Riverdale. When Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is left fighting for survival, his friends have problems of their own to deal with on the surface next time on the CW drama.

Archie Andrews is buried alive whilst a supernatural threat stalks the citizens of Riverdale in the next episode of the outlandish young adult drama.

After Wednesday night’s equally unpredictable outing, Archie’s latest occupation could prove his downfall.

The latest trailer heavily implies local gangster and the father of Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Hiram, has something to do with a catastrophic explosion in the Riverdale mines.

Time is quickly running out for Archie and another unnamed miner who gets trapped beneath the rubble right alongside him.

Up top, Veronica is finally confronting her father following his devious sabotage.

She warns him: “I want to be very clear with you. If Archie dies, you die.”

A synopsis for the next episode, ‘Dance of Death’, has revealed more about what’s to come.

It reads: “After learning that a friend has gone missing, Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) enlists help from Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) to investigate the disappearance.”

“Penelope (guest star Nathalie Boltt) plants doubt in Kevin’s (Casey Cott) mind, which leads him to confront Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) about the ministry.

“Finally, an explosion at the mines leaves several lives hanging in the balance.”

Riverdale could finally be making a stand against Hiram after his schemes have plagued the town for the past five seasons.

Meanwhile, the series is continuing down a supernatural path after Cheryl appeared to exhibit some uncanny abilities in the latest chapter.

In the latest trailer, the Blossom heir seems to be summoning up a powerful force in order to help the trapped miners.

Plus, Rose Blossom (Barbara Wallace) returns with yet another sinister warning about the so-called Mothmen.

We get our best look at the creatures so far as one of the strange beings appears to be stalking Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) in the woods.

Unfortunately, this Mothman bears much more resemblance to a costumed Scooby-Doo villain than their previous, fleeting appearances.

Toni could be getting a shock from a new menace, or the otherworldly beings may not be quite so out-of-this-world as previously thought.

On Reddit, one fan said: “Mothmen next week!! Veronica threatening Hiram! Oh I so look forward to it.”

With just three episodes left of the current season, fans could have to brace themselves for a potential death in Riverdale.

The fourth season already doubled back on Jughead’s supposed murder, but the next few week’s could be the darkest chapter of the show so far.

Hopefully Archie makes it out of the mineshaft alive, but Veronica’s patience with her father is wearing increasingly thin.

Riverdale season 5 continues Wednesdays on the CW and the following Thursday on Netflix.
