Queen of the South will return for a fifth season although a release date has not yet been confirmed. The USA Network drama did start filming but had to stop no thanks to the pandemic. One character fans are hoping they will see in the new episodes is Camila Vargas (played by Veronica Falcon).
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Queen of the South.
Vargas was introduced as the wife of Don Epifanio (Joaquim de Almeida), the head of a drug cartel in Mexico.
She left though so she could run her own operation in Dallas which became a massive success.
She and Teresa Mendoza’s (Alice Braga) paths crossed when Camila’s men kidnapped her, so she could find out why she was so important to her husband.
Over time, Camila started to trust Teresa and began teaching her about the drug business.
Teresa became Camila’s right-hand woman along with James Valdez (Peter Gadiot).
She learnt all about the cartel during this time but as Teresa started to branch off on her own, Camila didn’t approve.
She didn’t want Teresa taking her business and so started to plot against her.
Camila also schemed behind her husband’s back and was behind several murders after people tried to go against her.
So throughout the series, fans realised Camila was not a woman to be messed with.
Why was Camila made into the Queen of the South villain?
The USA Network is based on a book of the same name which was written by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.
In the novel, Camila was actually a minor character who was built up as one of the main antagonists for the series.
Speaking at an ATX Festival panel when the show originally launched, Executive Producer David T Friendly explained what initially attracted him to making the series.

Friendly said: “What some people may know is that it’s based on a spectacular novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.
“What I thought was interesting about it, the reason why I went after it as a piece of material, was the drug world is traditionally about men.
“And I felt this was a story in many ways about female empowerment, and to see a woman played spectacularly by this fantastic actress [Alice Braga] that I love, to go up against that world and see if she would be able to survive, was the hook for me.”
Friendly continued: “[Having Camila as a villain] extends this notion of, this world you’re expecting to see men just battling men.
“And then suddenly there’s this incredible relationship which is Camila, who in a certain way, is a mentor to Teresa.
“But Teresa will rise above and Veronica [Falcon] I had never seen her work before and she came in and killed us in the auditions.
“We were in Dallas for another event and she came in the elevator with me and I said: ‘You’re not going to hurt me are you?’
“So she’s a very powerful actress and her part is a very important counterpart to Teresa.
“You’re not quite sure of where this relationship is going and it has quite a few layers to it.”
Queen of the South is available to watch on Netflix.
