Penny Lancaster and Sir Rod Stewart married in 2007 and have two children together. However, the Loose Women panellist recalled the “awkward” moment her parents found out about her budding romance with the musician and explained why the revelation was taken out of her hands.

On Wednesday’s Loose Women, Penny joined host Kaye Adams, Brenda Edwards and Janet Street-Porter in the ITV studio.

The presenters were discussing the topic: “Do successful relationships start in secret?”

“How long [were you together] before you made it public with Rod?” Kaye asked Penny.

“I didn’t have a choice, the press made it public,” the model replied. “Like what’s happening here.”

“Would you have rather kept it secret?” Kaye asked.

“Well, for the children’s sake, Rod’s children and the fact there was always speculation about Rod’s new girlfriend,” she answered.

“I think it’s nicer to allow those people to make that choice rather than the press do it for you.

“They end up knocking on your father’s door and say, ‘By the way, did you know your daughter’s going out with Rod Stewart?’”

“It’s a bit awkward,” she added and Kaye asked: “Is that what happened?”

“Kind of,” Penny confirmed and the host questioned: “The press told your mum and dad before you told your mum and dad.”

“Exactly,” the mum-of-two replied. “It was really early days.”

“That’s a bit of a shocker,” Kaye quipped.

Elsewhere on the show, Penny and Janet clashed during a debate on whether people should be able to put “mum” on their CV.

Penny argued in favour of the notion while Janet pointed out this would discriminate against women who don’t have children.

Janet quipped: “I thought you were implying that that being a mother was a plus in getting a job.”

Interrupting, Penny said: “A mother has a huge amount of skill set.”

“I know, you’ve said all that,” Janet hit back. “I’m moving it on a bit.”

“But Janet, we’re not discriminating on the CV, it’s not ‘Are you a mother or aren’t you a mother?'” Penny argued.

“If you came to me for a job and said, ‘I’m a mother,’” Janet said and Penny interjected: “I wouldn’t come to you for a job, Janet.”

Kaye attempted to lighten the debate but the panellists continued to interrupt each other.

Loose Women airs on ITV on weekdays at 12.30pm.
