Netflix creating epic Conan the Barbarian live action series set to rival fantasy hit The Witcher

NETFLIX is creating an epic Conan the Barbarian live action series set to rival fantasy hit The Witcher.

The streaming service is adapting the Conan stories by Robert E. Howard into a new series, according to Deadline.

The outlet reports that Netflix has the exclusive option to develop projects based on the Conan Stories, whether it be for TV or film, live action or animation, thanks to a deal with Fredrik Malmberg’s Cabinet Entertainment, which owns Conan Properties International.

The character of Conan was famously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1982 movie, Conan the Barbarian.

While Arnold, 73, isn't associated with the new project, bosses are on the look out for a writer and show runner before moving on to casting the lead character.

A live-action Conan series would undoubtedly be well received by Netflix fans, thanks to the success of it's other fantasy series, The Witcher, which stars Henry Cavill.

There is also a gap in the market for an epic sword and sandals saga following the end of Game of Thrones in May last year.

Conan was first released into the public domain in 1932 with a series of Howard's stories about the mythical hero appearing in Weird Tales magazine.

Sadly, Howard died when he was just 30, so didn't get to see his work inspire a whole literary genre and then film.

Since Conan's inception, there has been over 100 novels, a multitude of comic books, three movies and two television series so far.

That's not forgetting the wealth of Conan memorabilia and toys that are available, many of which have become collectors items.

The success of Arnie's first outing as Conan lead to a sequel in 1984, Conan the Destroyer.

Meanwhile former Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa starred in a reboot of Conan the Barbarian in 2011.
