Berlin (played by Pedro Alonso) is undoubtedly a fan-favourite in the hit Spanish drama Money Heist, despite his many flaws. Many were devastated when he was killed off at the end of the second season of the show. reveals why the show took this devastating twist was and what the actor has revealed about his exit.

Why did Pedro Alonso originally leave La Casa de Papel?

At the end of season two of Money Heist, Berlin was killed during a brutal stand-off with the police.

Having been diagnosed with a terminal illness, he decided to sacrifice himself to give his team more time.

This meant he put himself in the firing line so they could escape from the Royal Mint of Spain.

The death was shocking for viewers who had grown to love the despicable character during the first two parts.

This also might have left some wondering why the star behind the role left the show.

Alonso has not revealed publicly why his character was killed off the show during interviews.

However, it seems like it was part of his storyline all along for the writers as it gave him a chance to be redeemed.

The plan also had not been to bring him back for a third season in flashbacks.

But when the show transferred to Netflix and became a global phenomenon, they felt like they had no choice.

This was revealed by scriptwriter Javier Gómez Santander during an interview with El Mundo back in September 2019.

He said: “Even characters with such a negative charge like Berlin end up being a bit redeemed and people have a brutal affection for them.

“So we get him back for this season. How were we going to give it up?

“If we had known that there would be more seasons, we would have thought hard about killing Berlin.

“He died a lot. We killed him too much and there is no way to revive him.”

At least Alonso was keen to be back in the series as he has gone on to play Berlin in almost every episode since.

Over the past two outings, he has been in several flashback sequences with the Professor (Álvaro Morte) as they revealed the plan for the current heist.

As well as this, viewers have met his ex-wife Tatiana (Diana Gómez) and even seen his relationship with Palermo (Rodrigo de la Serna).

Heading into the fifth and final season, viewers also know he will be returning again.

This comes after Netflix released some official photos with him and a new character played by Patrick Criado.

Although, despite what a big part of the show the character still is, the actor did reveal how it was not a straightforward return for him.

This is because he had to work out how to play this character during an earlier period of his life.

He told Identity Magazine: “When I had to play Berlin in the past, I had some serious difficulties to not destroy the role.

“When he was alive, he was the key to the chaos and irrationality.

“However, when he died, playing him in the flashbacks proved to be more emotional.”

Fans will have to wait until season five to see what happens next for Berlin.

Money Heist seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix now.
