During Wednesday evening’s Masterchef, five more hopefuls battled it out in hopes of impressing judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace with their cooking skills. The first round saw Gregg and John putting pressure on the budding chefs to make their signature dish. Mike cooked a squid-ink ravioli, Josh decided to make pan-fried duck breast as his signature dish, Alexina made a unique rump beef dish, Jim made a fillet of beef served on mixed mushrooms and Kerry made an Irish stew.
After impressing John and Gregg, they decided to put Kerry and Alexina straight through to the final round – meaning the remaining three had to battle it out against each other.
Each contestant got to cook a dish using their favourite ingredient. They were also given a selection of other items to help them along the way.
Jim created a dish using his favourite ingredient of cod fillet, Josh used cauliflower, while Mike’s favourite ingredient was chicken thighs.
In the end, Gregg and John chose to eliminate Josh.
The final round saw Jim, Mike, Alexina and Kerry battling it out for a place in the quarter-final.
They each had to make a selection of dishes, not only for John and Gregg but previous Masterchef champions Steve Wallis and Dean Edwards – who were not easy to impress.
Everything was going so well until poor Mike cracked under pressure and served up a raw lamb dish.
Speaking about the dish, Masterchef winner Steve commented: “The lamb chop, there’s a great big piece of undercooked fat on mine. Whatever he has marinated this is nice, but it lacks earthiness, it lacks depth.”
Dean added: “It’s a little bit undercooked, a lot undercooked.”
“That lamb cutlet isn’t cooked,” Gregg said behind-the-scenes.
“Not just the fat, the flesh, it isn’t cooked properly.”
“I’ve got a piece of bread that actually looks more like raw bread dough, that’s raw bread dough, it’s not cooked,” John critiqued.

Knowing he had messed up Mike said afterwards: “It was a complete whirlwind, that main I’m not thrilled but I can’t change anything.”
The raw lamb dish didn’t go unnoticed by viewers either, with many taking to Twitter to air their thoughts.
One commented: “Why can’t people cook lamb? Every year every episode raw lamb.”
Another said: “I’m doing a slab of raw meat and undercooked potatoes, enjoy.”
While one tweeted: “Raw meat klaxon.” Another fan added: “Raw lamb incoming.”
When it came to making their decision, John and Gregg instantly sent Mike packing after the raw lamb fiasco.
They also decided to send Jim home. Joining the other budding chefs in the quarter-final are Alexina and Kerry.
Masterchef returns on Monday at 9pm on BBC One.
