Before We Die is set to premiere today (May 26) on Channel 4 and will follow the story of Hannah Laing (played by Lesley Sharp), a hard-nosed detective. She becomes conflicted in a case when she discovers that her son is an undercover informant. But how many episodes will there be?
How many episodes are in Before We Die?
Channel 4 have confirmed that the series will consist of six episodes.
The show, which is based on a Swedish drama of the same name, will be available to watch from today, May 26, with all episodes ready to watch on All 4.
However, the show will also be available to watch weekly and will be shown each Wednesday on Channel 4.
The show has been described by the network as a “breathless crime thriller, full of heart-stopping jeopardy and unpredictable twists.”
It will also be set in Bristol and star Lesley Sharp who is best known for her work in Scott & Bailey.
Sharp will play Detective Inspector Hannah Laing who risks her career when she tries to help her erratic son, Christian (Patrick Gibson) who is involved in a murder investigation.
The series has been directed by Jan Matthys who has a long history of directing high-profile series.
Some of his more recent work includes GR5, Our Girl, Shetland and In Vlaamse Velden.
Writing the series is newcomer Matt Baker who is yet to have a full credit – his upcoming work also includes Professor T.
It is unconfirmed if this will be a self-contained mini-series or if it will remain open for more seasons in the future.
The original Swedish show it is based on received two seasons, originally airing in 2017 and finishing in 2019.
The Swedish series received critical acclaim, prompting Channel 4 to quickly greenlight the UK production.
Despite this being made by a UK production company and the show being set in Bristol, the series was mainly shot in Brussels.
Executive Producer on the series, Jo McGrath recently told Bristol 247 why the show decided to shoot in this location.
“We were looking for something a little less familiar and Bristol is one of those cities that actually has been used as a backdrop for filming a lot, but you wouldn’t know it because a lot of series are filmed there but not set there.
“Bristol is such a visually interesting city and editorially it fitted with our storyline. Belgium also features in our drug trafficking storyline.”
Besides Lesley Sharp who leads the series, the rest of the cast includes Patrick Gibson, Vincent Regan and Rebecca Scroggs.
Rounding out the main cast is Toni Gojanovic, Ryszard Turbiasz, Issy Knopfler and Kazia Pelka.
The official Before We Die Twitter account shared the trailer for the series earlier this month (May 13) which gave fans a glimpse of what to expect when the show premieres tonight.
The explosive trailer shows Hannah Laing battling a spiralling criminal plot and a crumbling family life – it opens with her speaking to her son Christian.
She says to him: “You are hardwired to survive, you will get through this.”
Later on in the trailer, a voice can be heard saying: “I’ll do everything necessary to protect the family”.
When the series was announced back in September of 2020, Channel 4’s Head of Drama Caroline Hollick said: “Every episode of Before We Die is a rollercoaster of excitement.
“I’m so delighted to have Lesley Sharp bring her trademark gravitas and charisma to Channel 4. It’s a privilege to be part of this truly inspiring European collaboration.”
Before We Die will be available to watch weekly on Channel 4 from May 26 at 9pm.
