Here's why Coronation Street is not on tonight – and when it will return

Having already faced a few schedule shake-ups in recent weeks, Coronation Street is once again absent from its regular Friday evening slot tonight.

The soap has kept us gripped in recent weeks, with Ryan (Ryan Prescott)’s cover being blown in his online videos, Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce)’s murderous deeds starting to catch up with him – and the sad closure of the Rovers Return.

With some truly dramatic developments to come in next month’s Super Soap Week, we can’t wait to see what happens next – but tonight we’ll just have to.

Why is the soap not on as usual – and when is the next episode?

Why is Coronation Street not on tonight?

Once again Coronation Street is missing from the schedules in order to give way to a major sporting fixture.

This time it’s the Rugby World Cup which is replacing our Friday evening Corrie fix – with the match between New Zealand and Italy airing live on ITV1.

The live coverage from OL Stadium in Lyon begins at 7.30pm, with kick-off at 8pm – and runs all the way through until the ITV News at 10.25pm.

It’s a big game for both teams, being the third and penultimate match of their Pool A games – with New Zealand still to take on Uruguay and Italy to face France.

And there’s a lot at stake for the All Blacks – who have never lost to Italy but need to win their next two games to qualify for the quarter-finals, having lost their opener to France before a win against Namibia.

Italy, meanwhile, will make it to the knockout for the first time if they beat New Zealand on Friday night.

When is Coronation Street next on?

Coronation Street returns to screens on Monday night with an hour-long episode, followed by another hour-long episode on Wednesday night.

The soap is set to miss another Friday night episode next week, taking a back seat for the Rugby World Cup once again as France take on Italy in Pool A.

However we’ve got plenty to look forward to in the coming episodes – as Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) and Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) prepare to exchange vows – and Carla (Alison King) finally realises the truth about what Stephen did to her – potentially leaving herself in deadly danger.

You won’t want to miss a minute.

Coronation Street continues on ITV on Monday night at 8pm.
