They both starred in Coronation Street and now actresses Kym Marsh and Katie McGlynn are teaming up once more for BBC One’s brand new drama The Syndicate.

The pair are amongst the star-studded cast of the fourth series of the show, which follows a group of kennel workers who have a big reason to celebrate when their numbers come in on the lottery.

And the actresses, who are best known for playing Michelle and Sinead on the cobbles, have been speaking about how it felt to land their first TV acting roles since Corrie.

Kym, who is taking on the part of Donna Sanderson, mum to one of the winners from The Syndicate, said the two could not be more worlds apart.

“It’s very different. You have more time to film scenes in drama because in a soap you’re, on average, doing about 10 scenes a day – sometimes more – and the turnaround is so quick,” she said.

The Morning Live host continued that it's only made her more excited to see what roles come her way in the future, saying: “We were given time and space to rehearse. It was great fun, I really enjoyed it and it’s made me want to do more really.”

And the star says she recognised some similarities between herself and the single mum character that she’s stepping into the shoes of.

Kym, 44, explained: “I come from a working-class background and we lived on council estates for quite a few years. I was also a young mum.”

She continued: “I was 18 and 21 when I had my first two kids. I didn’t have very much money. I did what I had to to provide for them. So I do identify with Donna in that sense. I think she’s a really good mum and she loves her children.”

Meanwhile, Katie was delighted to get the phone call to say she’d landed the part of Georgina Clarke, an ex-girlfriend of one of the lottery winners.

Speaking about leaving soap land behind and what she wants to do next, the 27 year old said: “I have worked on a drama before but it was so long ago now.”

“I filmed Waterloo Road and some others over the years. So I had an idea of what it was like but I jumped at the chance of this role,” Katie continued.

“I guess you could say it’s a bit of a cameo but it doesn’t matter to me because I just wanted to work with Kay [Mellor, the show's creator and writer]. I wanted to get back into TV drama land and the character Georgina is just brilliant.”

However, Katie and Kym aren’t the only two former soap stars taking part in the show. They’ll be joined by ex-Emmerdale stars Emily Head and Gaynor Faye.

The cast is completed by lots more familiar faces, including Neil Morrissey, Katherine Rose Morley and Joe Sugg in his TV acting debut.
