EMMERDALE fans have blasted the soap for the "terrible storylines" provided for actor Matthew Wolfenden's character prior to his decision to leave.
This weekend, The Sun exclusively revealed how Matthew, 43, would be quitting his role as David Metcalfe on the ITV soap after 17 years.
Matthew joined Emmerdale back in 2006 yet we reported how he blamed a lack of gritty storylines for his soap exit.
It appears ITV soap fans now firmly agree with the dad-of-three.
They have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to rant about the poor plotlines for the shop-keeper, with one writing: "They’ve given him rubbish storylines for ages. He deserved better."
Another put: "No surprise there! He’s had nothing to do for well over a year and it’s clear they have no idea what to do with him."

A third put: "It’s a shame. Great actor, but terrible storylines," as another mused: "Sorry to hear that."
One then put: "Not a surprise, he hasn't had much story in ages," while a viewer raged: "I’m not surprised, he’s barely in in and hasn’t had a good storyline in months."
A soap fan then added: "Great actor but he is hardly in it."
Matthew has told pals he has been bored with his character’s recent plotlines.

A TV source said: “Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change.
“He hasn’t been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there.
"He’s a fan favourite so will get a lot of support in whatever he decides to do next.
“He’s very excited about the opportunities available.
“He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit. It’s possible David could be killed off.”
It came after the actor faced a race-row probe in 2021.
Just weeks before his soap exit was revealed, Matthew delighted soap fans with a snap showing him cuddling his lookalike son.
Off-screen, Matthew is married to ex Emmerdale co-star Charley Webb, 35, who played Debbie Dingle in the ITV soap between 2002 and 2021.
