EastEnders has confirmed that Nancy Carter (Maddy Hill) will be returning to the BBC One soap later this year.
It’s been five years since the character last set foot in Walford, and she will return with a bang in upcoming scenes — much to the surprise of parents Mick and Linda Carter (Danny Dyer and Kellie Bright).
Given how fond they are of Nancy, the Carters will no doubt be over the moon at her sudden return, but the question is: what brings her back to East London from New Zealand?
Nancy made her first appearance in the long-running BBC One soap on January 1, 2014, when the then newly-introduced Carter clan made a trip to Watford to interrupt her wedding to Wayne Ladlow (Malachi Kirby).
The young woman became a much-loved character, and one of the many great offerings of former Executive Producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins’ unforgettable era.
Nancy departed Walford with lover Tamwar Masood (Himesh Patel) in 2016. It was confirmed in 2018 that she and Tamwar had become engaged, and Mick and Linda subsequently attended the wedding in early 2019.
Speaking about her return to the soap, actress Maddy Hill said: ‘I’m SO excited to be coming back and reconnecting with all the hilarious, warm, talented cast and crew and meeting some lovely new faces.
‘I absolutely loved playing Nancy and have often wondered what she’s up to, so feel very grateful to be able to rediscover her 5 years on!’
EastEnders’ Executive Producer Jon Sen added: ‘We’re delighted to have Maddy back and I can’t wait for audiences to see what’s in store for Nancy.
‘There’s a lot of mystery surrounding her return and she’s coming back to a family that have been through a very difficult year – things are definitely not as Nancy left them. Maddy is a fantastic actor and we feel very lucky to have her back in Walford.’
Maddy also starred as paramedic Ruby Spark in Casualty, before departing the medical drama in 2020.
