Dr Hilary addresses heartbreaking ICU recovery stats for coronavirus sufferers

Asked by Lorraine Kelly on her ITV chat show about the survival rate of those in intensive care units, Dr Hilary explained there’s just over 50 percent chance you will leave ICU having recovered from coronavirus but assured viewers many were surviving.

Dr Hilary remarked: “What we do know is those people who come out of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) quite quickly have either lost their lives or recovered.

“But what we do know, looking at figures from the Intensive Care National Order and Research Centre, figures for March were 165 patients in intensive care of which 79 died, 86 survived and were discharged better.

“But 610 are still in intensive care so we can’t say the figure is a fifty percent mortality, it’s less than that.”

Lorraine added: “But people are recovering and people are going home.”

  • Boris Johnson coronavirus: PM could take ‘6-8 weeks to recover’

His comments come after Boris Johnson was moved to the intensive care unit at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

A No 10 statement read: “The prime minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas’ Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent symptoms of coronavirus.

“Over the course of [Monday] afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital.

“The PM has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the first secretary of state, to deputise for him where necessary.

“The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication.”

As more information has emerged, politicians have been reacting to the news Mr Johnson has deputised to Mr Raab.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain before Lorraine’s show, Michael Gove said he was shaken by the news.

He explained: “It’s terrible, I’ve known Boris since we met as students and it’s been an amazing privilege to work with him as Prime Minister.

“It is an amazing privilege to work with him as Prime Minister and I’m just wishing him well.

Mr Gove added he is thinking of Carrie Symonds who is pregnant with Mr Johnson’s child.
