BBC Shetland viewers fume ‘what a load of rubbish’ after ‘weird’ twist

Peter tries to burn stolen body in Shetland

It’s safe to say many Shetland viewers were confused as DI Ruth Calder (played by Ashley Jensen) continued to try and solve the murder of Ellen Quinn (Maisie Norma Seaton).

On Wednesday’s instalment of the BBC drama, Ruth and Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) were adamant they had found their key suspect in Tom Knox (Dylan Blore).

However, when Ellen’s corpse was stolen from the hospital, Tom had a strong alibi with new evidence showing plummer Peter Ayre (Sandy Grierson) could be linked to her death.

As they headed to his house to speak to him, they discovered Ellen’s hospital tag and saw a fire glowing in the distance outside

Getting closer to him they realised Peter had put Ellen’s body under a pile of sticks and was performing some type of ritual as he chanted by a fire he had created in a symbol.

Trying to set her alight, Ruth and Tosh managed to get to him before he destroyed her body.

However, it wasn’t long before fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the unusual events that happened throughout the episode.

@Robert33737352 fumed: “What a load of rubbish Shetland has become. #Shetland”

@Simo21537664 added: “You want to know what’s happening, join the club.”

Next week it looks as though the team makes some progress in their case as they find the person responsible for the animal killings.

A synopsis reads: “With the main suspect for the murder of Ellen Quinn in custody, Tosh orders the team to find enough evidence to charge them.

“Calder struggles with Jean’s revelation about her father. The team find the culprit for the recent animal killings.”

Shetland continues next Wednesday on BBC One from 9pm.
