The Great British Bake Off is returning to Channel 4 this week as a whole new crop of bakers compete for the ultimate baking prize. Filming went a little differently in this year’s competition as the show headed to a new location – here’s everything you need to know about this.

Where is The Great British Bake Off 2020 filmed?

Since it began in 2014, the show has been filmed in Berkshire at Welford Park.

The iconic Bake Off tent is usually erected in the grounds of the country house and estate.

However, this year the show has had to buck with tradition in order to film the series safely.

Channel 4 decided to transfer filming to Down Hall Hotel in Bishop’s Stortford.

This is a country house hotel in Essex with 98 rooms in total.

Once again, the tent was erected in its grounds to allow filming to take place.

The decision was made to allow the production team behind the show and all of those involved to isolate with each other.

Speaking to Berkshire Live, a spokesperson said: “It has been well documented that the series was filmed in a covid-secure bubble this year, and the venue allowed for that.”

In order to be able to film the competition show, producers revealed to Broadcast how 120 production staff all had to live in a self-contained biosphere for six weeks.

Love Productions creative director Kieran Smith and managing director Letty Kavanagh explained to the publication how the hotel was key in allowing this.

Among those who had to live together in the coronavirus COVID-19-safe bubble were all of the cast and crew, hotel staff, producers as well as some children, chaperones and dog walkers.

Before entering the hotel, all of them had to self-isolate for nine days and take three tests.

This meant over a six week period, the entire show could be filmed without social distancing.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, deputy director of programmes at Channel 4 Kelly Webb-Lamb explained more.

She said: “What we’ve done is created protocols with the production companies.

“We’ve worked hard with them to put testing and quarantining regimes in place beforehand for all talent, all cast, all crew, so that when we go into the bubble we know that everyone there is negative.”

Despite all the changes, viewers should rest assured the tent will look the same when the contestants get inside of it.

Webb-Lamb added: “In the tent what you see looks like normal Bake Off, because it is normal Bake Off and we’ve been able to do that.”

The show officially begins on September 22 after filming started back in July.

Once again, there will be 12 bakers competing to win the prize of Britain’s top amateur baker.

The 11th series also has a new host among its line-up this year after Sandi Toksvig left in January.

Taking her place is comedian Matt Lucas who presents alongside Noel Fielding.

GBBO begins on September 22 at 8pm on Channel 4.
