The Coronavirus pandemic might have reduced the amount of soap episodes broadcast on a weekly basis, but the drama continues to be in full flow in EastEnders, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale — with all four serial dramas firing on all cylinders to keep us entertained.
EastEnders has given us many a superb moment over the last few weeks, with Phil Mitchell’s (Steve McFadden) return being just one that comes to mind, while Coronation Street has focused heavily on Gemma Winter’s (Dolly-Rose Campbell) struggle, as the young mum sought help.
Meanwhile, Hollyoaks delivered a thrilling instalment, as Jordan Price (Connor Calland) sent Juliet Nightingale (Niamh Blackshaw) and Sid Sumner (Billy Price) on a drugs run, while Emmerdale had viewers in tears, as Lydia Hart (Karen Blick) and Sam Dingle (James Hooton) tied the knot in an emotional ceremony.
While there’s less episodes of all the aforementioned dramas to enjoy, the storylines are just as compelling as ever — and here’s just some of the narratives that are still to come.
Geoff exposed in Coronation Street
Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) has been making Yasmeen Nazir’s (Shelley King) life a living hell for the best part of a year now, but — in recent weeks — there’s been something of a shift in their relationship, as Yasmeen has become aware that Alya (Sair Khan) may have been right about him all along.
With Yasmeen seemingly plotting her escape, is it only a matter of time before the truth comes to light and Geoff is exposed for the abuser that he is?
Sharon discovers the truth in EastEnders
Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) was devastated earlier this year when her beloved son Dennis Rickman (Bleu Landau) drowned in the boat crash. In the weeks that followed, she sought comfort from old pal Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), but little does she know that he had a part to play in her boy’s death, as he locked him in a room below deck prior to the impact.
With Dotty Cotton (Milly Zero) knowing the truth — not to mention the fact that they live in Walford, where secrets never remain secrets — one can’t help but wonder when she will discover Ian’s part in Denny’s demise.
Belle and Jamie’s affair revealed in Emmerdale
Jamie Tate (Alexander Lincoln) has been cheating on wife Andrea (Anna Nightingale) with colleague Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper), and — in spite of his determination to do right by daughter Millie — he’s been unable to resist temptation.
With Nate Robinson (Jurrell Carter) having discovered the affair, things have become somewhat complicated, but in the coming episodes, we know that Jamie reveals he’s in love with Belle.
However, affairs have a nasty habit of becoming public knowledge in the village, so one can’t help but wonder if it’s only a matter of time before Belle and Jamie’s dalliance is revealed to all — including Andrea.
Who’s in the body bag in Hollyoaks?
The New Year flash-forward episode was one of the Channel 4 soap’s finest ever instalments, and — with a year of expertly executed narrative building required as a result — it’s safe to say that it was certainly an ambitious move.
Mind you, it’s exactly this type of ambitious move that Hollyoaks thrives upon, and therefore it’s no surprise that one of the future scenes featured a body bag — the question, of course, is: which unlikely Chester resident is in it?
The answer to this mystery will no doubt be resolved at the end of the year.
Steve, Leanne and Oliver’s story in Coronation Street
Coronation Street viewers saw Oliver suffer a terrifying fit during an episode broadcast earlier this month, which left Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), Leanne Tilsley (Jane Danson) and Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) horrified.
While Oliver was seemingly fine following the fit, Corrie boss Iain MacLeod’s previous comments would suggest this is the beginning of a longterm storyline.
He said: There is a huge new story which I can’t say too much more about at this stage if you’ll forgive me for being cryptic but having re-established Steve and Tracy’s relationship on its strongest footing, something will happen that probably has the most far-reaching impact of any story we’ve done since I’ve been on the show, and I include both stints, where something horrifically difficult and challenging will happen that draws in 3-4 different clans on the Street and forces them to deal with the hardest thing anyone would ever had to deal with.’
Whitney’s fate in EastEnders
Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) has suffered immensely at the hands of stalker Leo King (Tom Wells), and — even in death — the paralegal continues to make her life a living hell, as she went to prison for a stint following his demise, and — in spite of Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) having got her out on bail — she awaits the trial for her alleged crime.
What’s more, she’s been made to feel unsafe once again, as Leo’s mum Michaela Turnbull (Fiona Allen) returned to the Square and became hellbent on revenge.
With Whitney’s future uncertain, one can’t help but wonder: will she go to prison?
DI Malone exposed in Emmerdale
DI Malone (Mark Womack) has already proven just how sinister he is — not to mention how far-reaching his influence is, what with him having threatened Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) with prison.
He’s terrorised half the village since his arrival, and few have been able to stand up to him, but — given Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) doesn’t like following orders — it’s no doubt only a matter of time before he seeks revenge.
Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) has become suspicious about what Cain’s been getting up to, so one can’t help but wonder if he will help out his relative and therefore expose Malone for the dodgy detective he truly is?
Warren and Felix’s feud in Hollyoaks
The animosity has been aplenty between Felix Westwood (Richard Blackwood) and Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) since the former’s arrival, and we’ve been given reason to suggest that they grew up in a children’s home together.
Thus far, Felix hasn’t been quite as sinister and manipulative as both Martine Deveraux (Kelle Bryan) and Warren suggested he was, which could mean there’s a much darker side to him that’s yet to come to light.
There’s evidently a lot of history between he and Warren, so it’s no doubt only a matter of time before we learn more.
Mick and Linda sell The Vic in EastEnders
It will well and truly be the end of a very great era if Mick and Linda Carter (Danny Dyer and Kellie Bright) follow through with their plan to sell The Queen Vic pub — a decision the landlord and lady came to several weeks back when they realised it wasn’t fair for Linda to be surrounded by temptation as she battles alcoholism.
With Shirley (Linda Henry) having informed Phil that the pub is up for grabs, will he purchase it for Sharon? Or will a new owner take over?
Either way, emotions will be certainly running high all across the nation when icons Mick and Linda pull their last pint and call last orders one final time.
No, you’re crying.
Juliet and Peri’s romance in Hollyoaks
The New year’s flash forward episode presented viewers with many a shocking moment, but perhaps none were more shocking than Juliet Nightingale’s (Niamh Blackshaw) confession of love to Peri Lomax (Ruby O’Donnell).
Recent episodes have seen this narrative set in motion, as Juliet has developed feelings for Peri, and came out to Sid in emotional scenes in the hour-long county lines instalment, but as of yet we’re still unsure as to how they two characters actually get together.
