For the last year, millions of people across the United States — and the world — have hunkered down in their homes amid the global COVID-19 pandemic. Countless businesses closed, hundreds of thousands of victims died, and people lost their jobs. Many of those who were lucky enough to keep their professions, however, were forced to adapt to the new way of life: working from home.
Fortunately, things seem to be looking up as a vaccine against the coronavirus has become available in recent months. On March 25, 2021, President Joe Biden announced his goal of having more than 200 million COVID vaccination shots distributed by late April (via CNBC). “I know it’s ambitious … [but] I believe we can do it,” Biden said during a press conference.
With these vaccines come eased COVID-19 restrictions. So far, states like Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas, among others, have lifted mask mandates, as well as allowing businesses to open up at a higher capacity (via U.S. News). Because people are going back to work and getting out on the road, Mercedes-Benz wants to make sure you drive safely and in style.
The luxury car company made that clear in its new commercial, which showcases the 2021 E-Class and features the tagline “New E. New Attitude.” The ad shows off the happy customers who are heading out on the road and ready to take on the day in their high-end vehicle, and Mercedes-Benz chose the perfect song to go along with the commercial.
The catchy tune in the new Mercedes-Benz commercial is "Could Have Been Me" by The Struts
The marketing team at Mercedes-Benz deserves a raise! In the commercial for the car company’s 2021 E-Class vehicle, the clip included a catchy song that you probably caught yourself humming along to. That tune is “Could Have Been Me” by The Struts, an English rock band from Derby.
The song is the perfect anthem for the “New Attitude” ad. While some are unenthused to get back to the morning grind, Mercedes E-Class customers are thrilled to head to work in the luxury vehicle — which has “advances to help make every drive safer, smoother, and more satisfying than ever before,” according to the car’s description.
As one woman in the ad prepares breakfast for her kids, she has a humdrum look on her face. “Don’t wanna wake up on a Monday morning / The thought of work’s getting my skin crawling,” plays in the background. The entire tune is about living with no regrets, and because of that, Mercedes-Benz wants you to drive the car of your dreams.
Considering the song is the rebel yell for living life to the fullest — and honestly, just a bomb melody — it’s not surprising that The Struts have been featured in other commercials throughout the years. It was previously used as the opening song for the 2016 video MLB The Show 16, as well as incorporated in the trailer for the video game series Ratchet & Clank.
