Jon Jones’ DWI arrest marks another sad turn for UFC star

Not even a global pandemic could keep Jon Jones out of trouble.

Coronavirus has confined most of America to their homes, but not the UFC star.

Albuquerque police arrested the light heavyweight champion, who twice has been stripped of his title because of failed drug tests or violating the UFC’s code of conduct, Thursday morning for aggravated DWI, negligent use of a firearm, possession of an open container and driving with no proof of insurance, according to

Officers initially responded to gunshots, per the report, which Jones, 32, said he knew nothing about. After a breathalyzer test revealed Jones was at least twice the legal BAC limit, he was arrested. Police reportedly found a black handgun under the driver’s seat of Jones’ car and a bottle of Recuerdo mezcal.

This is just the latest issue outside of the Octagon for Jones, the current UFC light heavyweight champion and No. 1 pound-for-pound male fighter. In 2012, he was arrested for a DUI after crashing his car into a pole in Binghamton, NY. He had his driver’s license suspended for six months after pleading guilty. Three years later, Jones turned himself in after a hit-and-run incident in which he ran a red light and hit two vehicles before running from the scene. A pregnant woman suffered a broken arm as part of the ordeal. He was stripped of his UFC light heavyweight title and suspended indefinitely. Six months later, he was reinstated.

In December 2014, he tested positive for cocaine, but was still allowed to compete in UFC 182 because the test was issued out of competition. He spent one day at a rehabilitation center before checking himself out. Jones has failed numerous drug tests during his time in the UFC, the most recent one coming in August 2017 for an anabolic steroid that led to a 15-month suspension.

Now he’s in trouble again, potentially leading to yet another suspension.
