Just like not looking after your skin or wearing certain clothing can age you, so can the colour of your hair.

According to hair experts at Smart Beauty, there is one main colour those over 40 should opt for if they want to look older, as well as which colour to avoid.

When asked if dying your hair blonde can make you look younger, they said: “It does indeed! Warm blonde tones such as honey, gold, caramel and strawberry blonde can take years off your face.

“If you are a natural blonde, try a toner that contains moisturising ingredients to make your hair more youthful.

“A toner will not only leave you with a lovely warm honey tone but also restore your hair’s health and vibrancy.”

However, not all shades of blonde can make you look younger. Certain tones can have the opposite effect.

A toner will remove an orange tone and make your hair natural-looking, bright and shiny.

For those who are brunettes and don’t fancy steering away from their brown hair colour, try adding some golden look to give off a “younger appearance”.

The experts explained: “Face-framing blonde highlights or a few caramel strands throughout the hair, will soften your features and brighten up the skin.”

Another option would be to try blonde balayage – a multi-dimensional colouring technique that makes your hair “look voluminous and therefore younger”.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are also colours that “will make anyone appear older”. These include black, cool dark brown, fiery red, yellow blonde, mousy blonde and dark grey.

While there is a common opinion that platinum blonde and silver hair dye ages you, the experts don’t believe so. They argued: “If your hair is healthy, shiny and matches your skin tone, any hair colour will make you look fresh.”
