Documentaries about musicians Tom Petty, Demi Lovato and Charli XCX are set to headline at the South by Southwest Film Festival this year.
Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free is drawn from a newly discovered archive of 16mm film showing Petty at work on his 1994 record Wildflowers.
The film is described as an intimate view of a musical icon and will make its world premiere as the centerpiece film.
Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil makes its world premiere as the opening night film. It is a powerful YouTube Originals documentary, exploring every aspect that led to Lovato’s nearly fatal overdose in 2018 and her awakenings in the aftermath.
Alone Together tells the story of Charli XCX, a popstar in quarantine, who embarks on a whirlwind creative and romantic journey while making an album in 40 days that unites a community around the world. The film makes its world premiere as the closing night film.
The 28th edition of the SXSW Film Festival is being held as a virtual event from March 16 to 20 in the wake of the pandemic. 75 feature films, including 53 films from first-time filmmakers, will be screened at the festival. It includes 57 world premieres.
