Former Strictly Come Dancing professional Kevin Clifton was left feeling red-faced during a recent episode of Steph’s Packed Lunch. Presenter Steph McGovern quizzed him on his relationships and his “reputation”, after his previous three marriages.
Steph sent me a DM afterwards and you texted me
Kevin, 38, made the decision to walk away from Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, just one year after he won the programme alongside then dance partner, Stacey Dooley.
However, the pair soon became romantically involved and announced they had become a couple after meeting on the show.
During an instalment last month of Steph’s Packed Lunch, Grimsby-born Kevin was left feeling flustered as Steph put him on the spot.
The Channel 4 present probed Kevin on his “reputation” that he received during his time in Strictly.
McGovern, 39, said: “I’m going to ask you one more that’s going to make you feel even more uncomfortable.
“Have you finally settled down now love, because you’ve got a terrible reputation on Strictly?”
Kevin instantly quipped: “What? It’s an ambush!”
Steph went on to add: “I’m kidding, I’m just trying to get the TV drama stuff, no, I’m going to leave it there don’t worry.”
Addressing the moment on his self-titled podcast, The Kevin Clifton Show, Kevin mentioned to fellow Strictly star Oti Mabuse that she interviewed him on Packed Lunch several weeks ago.
Oti described Steph’s question as “a slow-moving train” towards Kevin.
After discussing the tense interview, the ballroom and Latin ace told Oti: “Steph sent me a DM afterwards and you texted me.”
He added: “It was like, ‘No, no it was OK!’ It’s all good” before he erupted into laughter.
Oti had been presenting on Steph’s Packed Lunch when she quizzed Kevin on how he has kept busy since deciding to leave the Strictly ballroom.
“It’s been different, I watch the show obviously, well done by the way I haven’t seen you since,” Kevin told his former colleague as he congratulated her after winning the 2020 series with Bill Bailey.
Kevin went on to add: “It was nice to watch it as a fan on the last season because when you’re in it you can’t quite comprehend how many people are watching and how many people are going mad for the show. I thought I was going to be quite nonchalant about it.
“I’m going to leave the show and be quite quiet, I won’t be one of those people that bangs on about it.
“Then two weeks in I became this crazed obsessed fan,” he joked.
He continued: “Getting angry at Craig, ‘How is that a four?’ I was tweeting about it and thinking, ‘Well this is what it’s like [to be a fan].”
The professional star announced that over the lockdown periods, Kevin started a new line of work, writing a new TV drama before hoping he would shed some light on his new career.
Kevin said: “I can’t say too much about it at the moment, there are different things happening, I sort of turned to writing.
“I did a course online, actually Jed Mercurio’s course, and I just really enjoyed writing.”
He added: “I’ve had this idea in my head for a drama based in the ballroom world, the ballroom competition world, for quite a long time. It’s sort of in the works at the moment…”
