Meghan Markle’s U.K. Hairstylist Shares the Inspiration for Her Signature Hair Looks

British hairstylist George Northwood posted an Instagram ode to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, on Tuesday while simultaneously revealing himself as the creator behind some of her most iconic royal hair looks.

“It has been an enormous privilege and a lot of fun working with the The Duke and Duchess of Sussex over the past two years,” wrote the stylist on Instagram. “I have enjoyed every minute collaborating with this amazing couple who not only champion small businesses but have taught me so much about diversity, equality and the importance of good mental health.”

Northwood then proceeded to share a slew of iconic hair moments he was a part of, including Meghan’s appearance at the 2018 Fashion Awards, the duchess’s wedding to Prince Harry, and one of her last public outings as a working royal at the 2020 Endeavor Fund Awards.

During an interview with British Vogue, Northwood broke down the inspiration behind some of his favorite hair looks worn by Meghan, revealing that the final outcomes were often a result of a fun collaboration process with the duchess, as she managed to find a happy medium between her West Coast roots and her new life as a prominent royal.

“The messy bun purely came off the back of making the hair both appropriate and adhering to royal protocol, and modern at the same time,” explained Northwood. “We wanted it to be up, because a lot of the time it was appropriate for it to be up, but we didn’t want it to be too formal. We always wanted it to be refined imperfection—that’s what sums her up.”

The stylist even credited Meghan’s California upbringing as being the reason not only for their eventual blossoming friendship but also why Meghan remained such a relatable and influential public figure as a royal.

“As soon as I met her, she was just like my California girl clients. She said, ‘I’m a Cali girl,’ and I just said, ‘One of my favorites then.’ We hit it off—we immediately spoke the same language,” Northwood told the magazine.

“The way she approaches things is how an everyday woman would approach things—she has a real sense of style and she wanted to look approachable, even though she was a princess,” Northwood said. “She was a very modern princess, the sort of princess we can relate to and aspire to, and the hair just fell into that.”
