Jacques O'Neill has said that he feared claims of ADHD raised by his family "looked like an excuse for his behaviour".
The Love Island star said he was left feeling "so angry" after learning his mum had revealed his ADHD diagnosis while he was inside the villa.
The rugby player, 23, appeared on Thursday’s (4 August) Good Morning Britain where he discussed his decision to quit the ITV2 series back in July, after his explosive behaviour when former Islander Adam Collard arrived and made a beeline for Paige Thorne.
As he recalled his departure, Jacques said he felt that revealing his ADHD looked like "an excuse for his behaviour" but has since understood why his mum spoke out.
Speaking to GMB’s Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard, Jacques said: "When I got out, I was so ready to delete that but I was so angry with my mum. I was like, 'why have you put that out? It's looking like an excuse for my behaviour'.
"With me, I'm very like… I deal with everything, it's not about ADHD. We struggle, people with ADHD will understand me, we struggle a lot different to someone without ADHD."
Kate then asked him: "So were you worried that it was making it look like you were using your diagnosis as an excuse or something?"
In response, he said: "Yeah well exactly, I didn't want people to think that. And obviously, it wasn't that…
“I feel like my mum, the hate she was getting and seeing her son, she was very scared for me, so she felt like she had to put something out.
"But I was close to deleting that and then when I was getting the inspiration," he continued as Ben weighed in: "You see the difference it's making."
After leaving the villa, Jacques admitted that he was ‘very scared of life’ and worried about ‘what was next to come’ after his family received death threats.
The reality TV star added: "When I first came out, it was very different for me. I was scared, very scared of life and what was to come next to me.
"When I was in that holding villa after I left, I just wanted my mum, all I wanted to do was just be with my mum and just go into hiding. I was getting so much hate, me and my mum were getting death threats and everything."
After watching his crush move on with someone else, Jacques was said to have been left feeling “broken” over the blossoming new romance, however, the cheeky athlete didn’t let that hold him back as he's been spotted hanging out with his new BFF Antigoni on multiple occasions since leaving the show.
The blonde beauty has shut down romance rumours though, telling the Sun: "Me and Jacques are definitely not a thing. People can't believe that a boy and girl can just be friends."
