Catherine Tate’s whirlwind romance with Take That’s Jason Orange

Eurovision: Presenters with Hannah Waddingham open the show

Comedy actress and Doctor Who star Catherine Tate will play a starring role at the EurovisionSong Contest tonight when she announces the UK’s scores to a global TV audience of over 100 million people.

While viewers are likely to be familiar with the 53-year-old’s work, thanks to characters such as bored schoolgirl Lauren and her “am I bovvered” catchphrase, it is possible they have forgotten one of the more unlikely moments of her private life.

For a brief period from late 2011 until February 2012 the flame-haired star enjoyed a fling with Take That’s Jason Orange.

The couple originally met in March 2011 when they were both part of a sketch for Comic Relief.

Catherine dressed up as a parody version of him for spoof band Fake That.

She was joined by fellow comics James Corden, Alan Carr, John Bishop and David Walliams, who made up the other members of the band.

However, it took six months from shooting the sketch for the pair to meet again.

They were photographed in the same room supporting David Walliams during his 2011 Sport Relief swimming challenge.

In November 2011, while appearing on the Graham Norton Show, John Bishop recalled their first meeting, and how Catherine had made the first move.

“I was there when Catherine Tate – who was playing Jason Orange and looked like Jason Orange – was talking to Jason Orange and said to him ‘maybe we should have a coffee, can I get your number?’” he recalled.

“And he said ‘Yeah’. Now they are supposedly seeing each other.”

During their time together they were very low-key and were only spotted together a handful of times during their fledgling romance.

In October 2011 they enjoyed an evening together watching the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of the romantic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The RSC later confirmed that the pair had been to see the play.

By February 2012 it was reported that it was all over for the couple.

Jason, 52, quit Take That in 2013 for a quiet life in the Cotswolds and keeps his relationship status under wraps.

Meanwhile mum of one Catherine is currently in a relationship with American screenwriter Jeff Gutheim.

In November she will be seen on screens again in Doctor Who as she returns to the role of the hugely popular character Donna Noble opposite David Tennant’s 14th Doctor for the show’s 60th anniversary specials.

In the meantime, tonight will see her following in the footsteps of Amanda Holden, 52, who announced the UK Eurovision results last year.

At the time she caused a stir when she was accused of making clunky gags about foreign languages before revealing the scores.
